# Setting up your telehealth space

## The equipment and room setup you need for professional, confidential telehealth and in-person consultations.

A good telehealth setup is a quiet private room, a reliable internet connection, a headset and good lighting. Start with what your model needs and add to it as you grow.

**Equipment checklist**

- Computer or laptop with a camera and microphone
- Second screen, so you can see your client and take notes at the same time
- External webcam, if your built-in camera is poor quality
- Headset with a microphone, for clear audio and privacy
- Ring light or a lamp in front of you (not behind)
- Reliable internet: a wired connection or strong Wi-Fi
- Ergonomic desk and chair
- Printer, only if you deal with paper referrals

**For in-person or hybrid practice, add:** scales, a height measure and a tape measure, plus any profession-specific equipment.

**Your room**

- **Privacy:** use a room with a solid door that closes. Add blinds or curtains if people can see in.
- **Sound:** rugs, soft furnishings or door seals stop conversations being overheard.
- **Screen position:** angle your screen so only you can see client records. Use a privacy filter in shared spaces.
- **Background:** keep it tidy and neutral. Remove family photos, documents and mirrors, which can reflect your screen.
- **Paper records:** if you keep any, lock them in a cabinet and never leave them out between appointments.

**Before each video consultation**

1. Close other apps and browser tabs.
2. Join a few minutes early from your dashboard to check your camera and sound. (see [How do I start a video consultation?](https://help.healthbank.io/how-do-i-join-my-online-appointment?hsLang=en))
3. Have a phone number ready in case the connection drops. (see [My camera isn't working](https://help.healthbank.io/my-camera-isnt-working-what-do-i-do?hsLang=en))
