Insurance you need

The insurance a private practitioner needs in Australia, including professional indemnity and public liability for telehealth.

The type of insurance you require will depend on how you practice and what services you offer. For most practitioners, you will need professional indemnity and public liability insurance before you see clients, and your policy must cover telehealth if you plan to provide video appointments online.

Insurance Do you need it? Notes
Professional indemnity Yes Usually at least $10 million cover. Check your professional body's requirement. Must include telehealth.
Public liability Yes Covers injury or damage to clients and visitors at your premises.
Product liability If you sell products Needed if you sell supplements, food or equipment.
Workers' compensation If you employ staff Mandatory once you hire.
Business insurance Optional Covers equipment, theft and business interruption.

Tip: professional bodies often negotiate member discounts with insurers. Check with your association or in the member portal for current offers.

The minimum cover required by most practitioners is usually professional indemnity and public liability cover. You can also create a bespoke policy with your insurer if you have a unique business model.

If you are unsure of what you require, speak with your professional association and/or the insurance company.
